Most scars occur following traumatic injuries or surgery. Sometimes, scars become discolored and elevated, which intensify their appearance. Facial scarring can be especially troubling if they become a focal point during social interactions.
Scar revision can involve several different modalities, including surgical excision, laser skin resurfacing or injection of steroid or other medications. The use of other techniques, including microneedling, is also an option.
Benefits of Scar Revision
Scar revision can:
- Improve the appearance of a scar by reducing elevation and discoloration.
- Decrease discomfort associated with a scar.
- Restore a more harmonious and natural facial appearance.
Candidates for Scar Revision
Candidates for scar revision:
- Do not have a history of serious health problems.
- Do not smoke.
- Are able to avoid significant sun exposure while healing.
The Scar Revision Procedure
Scar revision can often be performed in our office. There are several different modalities that can be used to improve the appearance of your scar. Some scars need to be surgically removed. This process begins by numbing the area of the scar. A new incision is then made around the scar, and the scar is removed. The skin is then sutured back together using specialized techniques that allow the area to heal with less scarring.
If laser skin resurfacing is used in treatment, the scar will be anesthetized with topical anesthetic. A laser will then be applied to the area of the scar. Laser resurfacing will take 30-60 minutes to complete and helps to improve elevation and discoloration of scars.
Less severe scars can often be treated with injections of medication, like a steroid. These medications help to decrease inflammation and the formation of disorganized collagen associated with scarring. Other techniques, like microneedling, can also help improve the appearance of scarring.
Results and Recovery After Scar Revision
Following repair, you may experience swelling and bruising. You may also experience itching around incisions as you heal. Most patients are able to return to work the same day or within one to two days, depending on the complexity of the surgery. You will be provided with a prescription for an antibiotic ointment to apply to the incision(s), and we request that you keep the area clean to prevent infection.
Post-surgery recommendations following scar revision include:
- Apply an ice pack to the surgical areas during the first week after surgery to control swelling.
- Protect your skin from the sun, which will help prevent the return of scarring.
- Do not smoke.
- Avoid strenuous exercise or lifting weights over eight pounds for one week after surgery.
