Submental fullness is used to describe the collection of fat beneath the chin. Fullness in this area is often affectionately referred to as a “double chin.” Fat beneath the chin can accumulate with weight gain or as part of the normal aging process. Even with weight loss, submental fat and fullness are often difficult to eliminate.
Prior to the development of Kybella, neck liposuction was often required to improve submental fullness. Although neck liposuction can still be used to address this area, Kybella has proven to be an effective, non-surgical alternative for the improvement of submental fullness.
Benefits of Kybella
- Decrease the appearance of neck fullness.
- Help restore the angle between the neck and chin (the cervicomental angle).
Candidates for Kybella
Candidates for Kybella:
- Do not have a history of serious health problems.
- Do not have a history of excessive scarring or keloid formation.
- Are able to return to our office for multiple treatments.
The Kybella Procedure
Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable procedure for the reduction of submental fat and fullness. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that assists in the breakdown and digestion of fat.
Prior to injection, your neck will be cleaned with alcohol. A topical anesthetic is then applied to the neck to numb the area. A grid is applied to the skin to ensure a precise injection, and Kybella is then injected. Multiple small injections are placed uniformly across the area of fullness. After injection into the submental area, Kybella begins destroying fat cells.
Following treatment, most patients can return to work the same day. Most patients experience swelling in the area of injection, which improves over one to two weeks. This swelling can often be camouflaged by a scarf or turtleneck. Over the next month, the body naturally removes the destroyed fat cells, and the neck becomes slimmer and more contoured.
The amount of Kybella required depends on the degree of fullness present in the submental area. Most patients require two to four treatment sessions to see desired results, while other patients require six sessions. Treatments are completed every four to six weeks.
Results and Recovery After Kybella
Following surgery, you will experience swelling at the area of injection. This swelling improves over two weeks. You may also experience temporary numbness and lumpiness in the area of the injection. These symptoms will improve with time.
Post-procedure recommendations following Kybella injection include:
- Apply an ice pack to the injection area for the first 24-48 hours after injection.
- Avoid strenuous exercise or lifting weights over eight pounds for the first three days after injection.
